  • Description

EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS OF LIMENOS (INHABITANTS OF LIMA) GATHER IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENES TO ATTEND AN EARLY-MORNING OPEN AIR MASS BEFORE FOLLOWING THE BIER OF "NUESTRO SENOR DE LOS MILAGROS" (OUR LORD OF THE MIRACLES") IN A MASSIVE DAY-LONG PROCESSION. PRESIDENT JUAN VELASCO ALVARADO AND HIS FAMILY WERE AMONG THE MANY WHO WATCHED FROM BALCONIES ALONG THE ROUTE OF THE PROCESSION.

THE FIGURE OF THE CHRIST WHICH IS CARRIED ON THE PORTABLE ALTAR IS ONLY A REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE WHICH IS KEPT IN THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENES.

MEMBERS OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF OUR LORD OF THE MIRACLES (WEARING COLOURFUL PURPLE CAPES) ATTENDED TO THE FAINTING OR THE SICK, WHILE OTHERS OF THEIR NUMBER CARRIED THE HEAVY BIER WITH ITS PRECIOUS LOAD. EVERY HUNDRED PACES THEY WOULD STOP AND PLACE THE BIER ON THE GROUND, WHILE ONE OF THEM - SPECIALLY ASSIGNED TO THIS TASK - PLACED NEW FLOWERS AND WREATHS ON THE BIER AS HE TOOK OFF THE PREVIOUS ONES. THEN THEY PICKED IT UP AND CONTINUED THE PROCESSION. ONE OF THESE STOPS TOOK PLACE AT THE FOOT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE BALCONY - WHERE PRESIDENT VELASCO SALUTED IT, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY AND ENTOURAGE.

THE PROCESSION, WHICH HAD STARTED AT 6.10 A.M. WITH THE MASS, ENDED AT 3 A.M. THE FOLLOWING MORNING IN THE CHURCH OF NUESTRA SENORA DE LAS VICTORIAS (OUR LADY OF THE VICTORIES) - ONLY A FEW HUNDRED YARDS AWAY.
