    MALAWI ON TUESDAY CELEBRATED THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HER INDEPENDENCE WITH A GIANT RALLY IN BLANTYRE, THE CAPITAL. MOST OF THE TIME WAS TAKEN UP WITH SINGING AND TRADITIONAL DANCING. GUEST OF HONOUR WAS THE MAN WHO HAS LED MALAWI THROUGH HER FIRST YEAR. DR. HASTINGS BANDA, THE PRIME MINISTER.

    DR. BANDA CELEBRATED THE DAY WITH TWO SPEECHES IN WHICH HE WAS WARM IN PRAISE OF MALAWI'S FORMER COLONIAL RULER -- BRITAIN. THE FIRST SPEECH WAS AT THE RALLY -- AND THE LATER ONE AT A STATE BANQUET. DR. BANDA SAID THAT THE BRITISH WERE THE ONLY NATION TO REALISE THAT GUNS AND MACHINE-GUNS WOULD NOT HOLD BACK PEOPLE DETERMINED TO GET THEIR INDEPENDENCE. THE BRITISH ALSO KNEW HOW TO GET ON WITH PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES AFTER INDEPENDENCE.

    MALAWI HAS BEEN THREATENED FOR SOME TIME WITH AN INTERNAL REBELLION HEADED BY TWO BREAK-AWAY MINISTERS FROM DR. BANDA'S CABINET -- MR. HENRY CHIPEMBERE, AND MR. KANYAMA CHIUME. DR. BANDA SAID THESE MEN WERE ANTI-EUROPEAN, WANTED A REPUBLIC RIGHT AWAY, AND WANTED TO GET RID OF ALL EUROPEANS. DR. BANDA SAID HE WAS NOT GOING TO PUT AN AFRICAN IN A JOB JUST BECAUSE HE HAD A BLACK FACE.
