  • Description

In the Italian capital, Rome on Tuesday (18 February), about 4,000 representatives of communes and towns throughout the country marched through the streets calling for greater autonomy from the central Government.

The demonstrators - many of them dressed in their Mayoral robes or in police uniforms - were also protesting against what they called the recent upsurge in Fascist violence.

They gathered in the central Piazza Santi Apostoli and heard Milan's Socialist Mayor, Aldo Aniasi, condemn the Government for its slowness in implementing the recently passed devolution laws.

He also accused the Government of taking insufficiently rigorous action against the "Fascist violence".

The demonstration is believed to have been the first ever mounted by Italian communal officials.
