  • Description

Three-hundred thousand Sao Paulo workers went on strike recently demanding a 45% wage increase and their claims went before the Justices for arbitration.

Ten days later, on October 25, the workers thronged into Roosevelt square to hear the outcome of their action. Approximately 10,000 people gathered around two trucks which were set up in the centre of the square as a rostrum. There was much at stake, yet as they awaited the Judge's decision, the crowd were well behaved.

Evenso, the police were ready with fire hoses should the strikers get out of hand.

Sao Paulo's State Vice Governor, who had pioneered the workers' claims, arrived on the scene and was carried shoulder-high to the rostrum where he made an encouraging speech.

And finally, the news arrived: the courts had agreed to order a general increase in wages of 25%. The announcement was met with great enthusiasm all round --and many of the crowd began to dance and sing.

It was a satisfactory outcome to what could have been an explosive situation--and the fire hoses merely dribbled to provide refreshment for dozens of dry, hoarse throats.
