    BEFORE LEAVING SEOUL, THE SOUTH KOREAN LEADER, WHO ASSUMED CONTROL OF THE RULING MILITARY JUNTA LAST JULY, TWO MONTHS AFTER THE ARMY OUSTED PRIME MINISTER JOHN CHANG, SAID HE WOULD REAFFIRM AND ENDEAVOUR TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN THE FRIENDSHIP HAPPILY EXISTING BETWEEN THE USA AND SOUTH KOREA. HE SAID HE WAS CONFIDENT THAT UNITED STATES OFFICIALS WOULD "UNDERSTAND THE INTENTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS OF SOUTH KOREA IN OUR FIGHT AS A VANGUARD OF THE FREE WORLD AGAINST INTERNATIONAL COMMUNISM".

    ON THE EVE OF GENERAL PAK'S DEPARTURE FOR THE UNITED STATES, THE RULING MILITARY JUNTA ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF EX-PRIME MINISTER CHANG, WHO HAS BEEN UNDER HOUSE ARREST SINCE MAY 16, WHEN HE SURRENDERED HIS GOVERNMENT POWERS TO THE SOUTH KOREAN MILITARY.
