  • Description

Five hundred people packed into a Woodford, Essex, hall, Apl 20 to hear Sir Winston Churchill tell his constituents "I shall be ready to offer myself once again as a candidate in your constituency, which I have had the honour of representing for nearly 35 years."
Sir Winston, 84 years of age last November, was making his first public speech for 20 months. His statement killed rumours that he would fade out of politics when the General Election is held.

During his speech Sir Winston, at the top of his form, covered a great range of world and home affairs. He criticised Russian Premier Kruschev for accusing hi of starting the 'Cold War' and said "I seek, and have always sought, nothing but peace with the Russians. Both Russia and England have all to gain and nothing to lose from peace."
Deafening applause broke out as Sir Winston ended his twenty-five minute speech by saying "I am most grateful to you for your kindness and I shall do my utmost to serve you so long as my breath holds out."
