    HISTORY WAS MADE IN KENYA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WHEN DOCTORS IN A NAIROBI HOSPITAL CARRIED OUT CORNEAL GRAFT OPERATIONS ON TWO PEOPLE, USING EYES DONATED BY THE WASHINGTON EYE BANK, IN THE UNITED STATES. THE TWO EYES, IN AN ICE-PACKED VACUUM CONTAINER, ARRIVED BY AIR FROM WASHINGTON ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

    THE OPERATIONS TOOK PLACE ON NAIROBI'S MATER MISERICORDAE HOSPITAL, AND WERE CONDUCTED BY DR. ABDUL AWAN.

    THE RECIPIENTS WERE A 55-YEAR-OLD INDIAN WOMAN LIVING IN KENYA, AND A 16-YEAR-OLD KENYAN YOUTH. BOTH HAD LOST ONE EYE, AND MOST OF THE REMAINING SIGHT IN THEIR OTHER EYES, DUE TO CORNEAL SCARRING.

    ASSISTING DR. AWAN IN THE OPERATING THEATRE WERE DR. VED BHARDWAY, A GOVERNMENT ANAESTHETIST, AND TWO AFRICAN HOSPITAL ASSISTANTS, WASHINGTON ODIOMBO AND JAMES NGIGI.

    ABOUT 200 SUCH OPERATIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN KENYA OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE INVOLVED EYES DONATED FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY.

    DR. AWAN HAS PERFORMED 50 OF THE OPERATIONS, WITH 48 OF THEM BEING SUCCESSFUL.

    THE EYES ARE THE FIRST GIFT TO THE NEWLY DEVELOPED EYE BANK OF KENYA, AND CAME FROM THE INTERNATIONAL EYE BANK AT SIBLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, IN WASHINGTON.

    IT IS ESTIMATED THERE ARE MORE THAN 500,000 BLIND PEOPLE IN KENYA -- 40 PER CENT OF WHOM MAY BE HELPED BY CORNEAL GRAFTS.

    DOCTORS ARE OPTIMISTIC OVER THE TWO LATEST OPERATIONS, BUT THE FINAL RESULTS WILL NOT BE KNOWN FOR SOME TIME.
