  • Description

BRITAIN'S LATEST NUCLEAR REACTOR TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY - THE BIG EXPERIMENTAL ONE AT WINDSCALE IN CUMBERLAND - IS NOW RUNNING AT FULL POWER. COSTING NINE MILLION POUNDS, THE REACTOR, ENCLOSED IN A ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOOT DOME, IS A DEVELOPMENT ON THE PIONEER REACTORS OF THE CALDER HALL TYPE.

WINDSCALE HAS NOW BEEN SUPPLYING POWER TO THE NATIONAL GRID FOR OVER THREE WEEKS - ENOUGH TO SUPPLY A TOWN OF THIRTY-FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE.IT WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO BRING NEARER THE DAY WHEN CHEAPER POWER COULD BE PRODUCED FROM THE ATOM THAN FROM COAL OR OIL. BUT CONVENTIONAL POWER COSTS ARE COMING DOWN, AND OUR INDUSTRIAL CORRESPONDENT WHO'S BEEN THE WINDSCALE SYSTEM CAN COMPETE WITH AMERICAN OR CANADIAN DESIGNS. THE DECISION WHETHER TO GO ABROAD FOR KNOW-HOW WILL HAVE TO BE MADE SOON.
