  • Description

The first anti-British, anti-Turkish demonstration organised by Athens University and other High School students and the Cypriot students of various Greek Institutions in Athens broke out last night around the University building and central section of Athens in protest against the week long 'Turkish Atrocities' in Cyprus. The entire police force was alerted, the University Academy, and Library buildings were cordened off while police patrolled the main streets reporting gatherings of students back to headquarters. All trolley buses of British controlled Athens Power Transport Corporation were withdrawn early in the afternoon.

In spite of the decree of the Minister of the Interior banning the demonstration, thousands of students attempted to gather in various parts of the city in small groups to march on the University and residential quarters where the British and Turkish Embassies were strongly guarded. There were many clashes with the police, and some were injured.
