Background: Illegal production of alcohol in Polish homes has reached an all-time high. Vodka has always been a traditional and very popular drink in Poland, but the past several years of economic hardship and rationing have forced the price of this near-staple to unaffordable levels: a half-litre of vodka in the shops will cost 700 zloties (US $ 7.70) while the same amount can be produced at home for 25 zloties (27 US cents). Also the strongest shop alcohol is 90 per cent proof, but the home product usually exceeds that by several percentage points. The cost of building a home still is 3,500 zloties (38 US dollars) but over a long period the saving is very large. Home vodka is made with sugar, which is a rationed item, but this is not a deterrent. For a first offence, home equipment is confiscated, but for a second offence, there's a fine. A third offence may result in a jail sentence of up to 5 years. The amount of homes producing their own alcohol is estimated at one in three, but in the countryside this figure way be even larger.
