  • Description

British motor racing champion, James Hunt, won the Daily Mail Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, near London, on Sunday (14 March) against a field of top international racing drivers.

Hunt won the race which is the traditional curtain-raiser to the European Formula One motor racing season. The British champion won the event, worth more than 70,000 pounds sterling (about 140,000 US dollars), after a gruelling tussle with Australian driver, Alan Jones.

Jones, a comparative newcomer to Formula One racing, led the field for the first half of the race, but found it impossible to lose the determined Hunt.

One of the favourites for the race, Austrian, Niki Lauda, chased Jones and Hunt in third place for much of the race, but was forced to retire in the 17th lap after he lost a brake wheel on his new 12-cylinder Ferrari.

South African Jody Schecktern, who dominated the practice sessions in his Tyrrell, spun off the track during the race and damaged his car.
