Background: A large crowd watched the Spanish soccer club Barcelona win the first leg of their European Cup semi-final over Hamburg, Apr 12, on the Spanish team's home ground. Before the start of the game both teams were presented to the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Castiella.
Throughout the first half Barcelona played the German team at their own game of short passing and always looked as through they might score. Always dangerous on the attack the Spanish team often had the Hamburg defence worried and forced to kick wild clearances.
The first and only score came 20secs after the start of the second half when a move ended by Evaristo scoring. The crowd went wild with delight. They had a few bad moments when Hamburg swept back in an attempt to get on level terms but the Barcelona defence held out and the match ended in a win for the Spanish team.
Only one goal up Barcelona will be hard pressed to maintain their lead when the teams meet again in Hamburg.
