  • Description

United States aircraft struck North Viet Nam just north of the de-militarized zone Monday (22 May) after being called in by U.S. Marines. The Marines had crossed into the DMZ during a search for the North Vietnamese.

The filming of the U.S. aircraft dropping its bombs is believed to be the first time a U.S. attack on North Viet Nam has been filmed from the ground.

The Marines were examining a supply of North Vietnamese mortar shells when North Vietnamese artillery began firing at them. The Marines called in air support and a film crew filmed the plane and the dropping bombs.

After the air strike, the North Vietnamese shelling stopped. Two Marines had been killed, 25 wounded.
