Background: ALGERIAN President Houari Boumedienne arrived in Cairo on Wednesday (23 May), and immediately began talks with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt on a joint diplomatic drive to persuade African countries to take a more active role in the crisis in the Middle East.

When the Algerian leader arrived at Cairo airport, he was flanked by a Guard of Honour as he met a large party of Egyptian Government officials.

Both presidents flew to Addis Ababa on Thursday (24 May), to take part in celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), and to hold a series of meetings with other african leaders on the crisis.
