  • Description

In South Vietnam, Government Forces intensified their air raids on communist targets following the loss of a provincial capital to communist troops on Tuesday (7 January).

Government military sources said the F-5 and A-37 jets bombed logistic targets for two days from Tuesday in more the 60 "sorties" against the Viet Cong.

Fierce fighting also continued in the Khmer Republic where communist-led insurgents clashed with Government forces in the New Year offensive.

The insurgents had increased their pressure on the Khmer capital Phnom penh's vital Mekong River supply route.

However, Government troops had some successes, including relieving a besieged divisional headquarters 16 miles (24 kilometres) northwest of the capital on Tuesday.

During the week-long seige of the camp, it was reported that 80 people--20 soldiers and 60 civilians (dependents of soldiers) -- were killed.
