  • Description

Heavy fighting in the Khmer Republic this week centred on the industrial town of Takhmau, six miles (10 kms) south of the capital Phnom Pehn.

While some of the fiercest encounters broke out along Highway Thirty, the road running south along the Bassac River, a handful of shells landed in the city itself. In there days of shelling, 24 people were killed, 62 wounded and hundreds of refugees fled from the town to Phnom Pehn.

One of the shells fell near the Army headquarters at Takhmau, which has been the insurgents' principal target during the fighting. Meantime, the commander of the Khmer Second Division, Brigadier General Dien Del, was out in the field to witness the fighting along Highway thirty.

Government troops called in air-strikes by T-28 aircraft to soften up one strategic point held by the insurgents. Following an artillery and mortar barrage, they succeeded in capturing emplacements and weapons.
