Background: The whole of Italy celebrated the 12th, anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic, on June 2nd., with military parades. In Rome nine thousand soldiers, sailors and airmen marched through the streets with 100 artillery pieces, 150 tanks and self-propelled guns, 100 armoured cars, 300 motor vehicles and 350 horses.
As the columns swung along the Via dei Fori Imporiali, a large number of modern fighter and bomber planes screamed and roared overhead in a series of formation.
President Giovanni Gronchi was on the saluting base, accompanied by Military Attaches and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
