  • Description

In Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday (10 January), visiting Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka held separate talks with Thai government leaders and students on Japans economic role in Thailand.

Mr. Tanaka first met with a delegation of Thai government officials, led by Prime Minister Sanya Dharmasakti. According to a II-point statement issued after the meeting, Mr. Tanaka exchanged frank views with Mr. Sanya on current international affairs, in particular the situation in Asia.

The two heads of government also discussed the thorny issue of trade relations between Japan and Thailand. The imbalance of trade in Japan's favour has been the root cause of student demonstrations which greeted Mr. Tanaka on his arrival on Wednesday (9 January).

After his three-hour meeting with Prime Minister Sanya, Mr. Tanaka met a 13-member student delegation. Journalists were barred from the actual meeting, but Mr. Tanaka later told a press conference that he had not minced words at the 90-minute discussion.

Thai students claimed that Japanese investment in Thailand was not aimed at helping Thais and attacked Japanese businessmen for allegedly not training their local employees in management jobs.

At the same time, Mr. Tanaka said he had told the students that Thailand accounted for only about one ninetieth of Japan's foreign trade. If Thailand could manage to export more of its maze, rice or sugar, the imbalance could be cut by nearly half.

According to Thai statistics, the imbalance reached 325 million U.S. Dollars in Japan's favour in 1972.
