  • Description

South Vietnamese special forces fought an intense seven and one-half hour battle with the Viet Cong at Hiep Duc, a district capital 35 miles southwest of the airbase at Danang. The civilian population of the village was badly battered.

The Vietnamese soldiers were airlifted in Hiep Duc by U.S. Marine helicopters, two of which were shot down. There they fought a furious action against the Viet Cong who had captured the village and entrenched themselves. Much of it had been burned to the ground by the Viet Cong and some of the defenders impaled on stakes. The Vietnamese special forces, aided by U.S. airstrikes charged the Viet Cong positions in the teeth of heavy machine gun fire. By Friday evening, the Viet Cong had been driven out, and the civilian population could be seen to have suffered very badly.

The civilian wounded were evacuated by helicopter. Tohers, their homes destroyed, simply sat in the village streets and burning buildings still hung in the air the next day. Bodies littered the area. One man took refuge in one of the downed Marine helicopters.
