  • Description

The ninth Japanese international toy fair opened on Wednesday (September 9) in the Tokyo Municipal Hall for three days. Ninety-one major toy manufacturers of Japan joined in the fair to display more than 50,000 different toys to thousands of invited buyers, both Japanese and foreign.

It is expected that 15,000 buyers will visit the fair. The Japanese toy industry is second only to the United States in world production, manufacturing 300 million US dollars (about 125 million sterling) worth of toys last year, and exporting over two thirds of them.

The trend of the fair, this year, is more orthodox toys. Thousands of dolls have been manufactured -- as they are still proving popular among the children of the world. Trains too are to be seen everywhere but surprisingly not space capsules or astronauts.

A special feature of this year's fair is that the prices are moderate even though many of the toys are highly sophisticated. With West Germany and Hongkong chasing Japan in terms of toy production, the Japanese manufacturers are having to develop new fields.
