  • Description

The United States Government is reported to be preparing to launch a renewed effort to achieve an interim peace agreement in the Middle East after receiving an optimistic assessment of the situation there from Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan.

General Dayan, who held talks with United States Secretary os State William Rogers on Tuesday (14 Nov). told newsmen afterwards he believed "the Egyptian inclination to resume fighting is weaker than before, and generally speaking all things seem more peaceful today than before."
The Israeli Defence Minister said that the Middle East situation was far better than a year ago. He added: "My feeling is that the situation is much better. The Russians have left Egypt, Lebanon is ready today more than before to fight Palestinian guerrillas, and the Jordanian regime seems to be quite stable."
It is now two years since a United States initiative brought about a ceasefire in the Middle East, and Mr. Rogers said earlier this year that the U.S. would very soon try again to bring Israel and the Arab countries to terms for an interim peace agreement.
