  • Description

INTRODUCTION: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt said in Paris on Saturday (2 April) that unless the United States put pressure on the Israelis, they would not move towards a Middle East peace settlement. He was speaking to newmen during a brief visit to France on his way for talks in Washington with President Carter.

SYNOPSIS: President Sadat went to the Elysee Palace for an hour of talks with President Valery Giscard D'Estaing. The talks followed hard on the heels of a meeting between the French President and another visitor, U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance.

Mr. Vance, who visited Israel and the Arab states two months ago, has said the time is ripe for bringing the two sides together for renewed Geneva negotiations.

President Sadat arrived in Paris from Bonn, where West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt said on Friday (1 April) that he believed the Palestinians should have a seat at any Geneva talks. Mr. Sadat wants France to persuade its Common Market partners to support efforts for a reconvened Geneva conference.

Mr Sadat told newsmen in Paris that France and Egypt shared views on Palestinian representation at Geneva, but did not elaborate.

Palestinian representation has been the main stumbling block on the road to Geneva. Israel has said it will not negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which it says is a terrorist group. President Sadat was due to leave Paris for Washington on Sunday (3 April).
