  • Description

Some 200 Jewish squatters were camping in Israeli-occupied West Bank of Jordan on Thursday (10 October), defying government troops under orders to prevent the squatters from establishing illegal settlements in the area.

The previous day, troops and police had evicted several hundred squatters. But one group of settlers had entrenched themselves near the monastery of Wadi Kelt. And, despite the presence of Army contingents, there they remained
Soldiers were unable to evict these settlers because of the sheer impossibility of access -- there is no road, and both squatters and soldiers reached the place on foot. The settlers' defiance lasted until Friday, when soldiers carried them out on stretchers.

The settlers, backed by the religious and centre-right opposition Likkud parties, claim that Jews have the historic right to settler anywhere in Biblican Palestine. Their squatting operations at this time are designed to coincide with the latest round of Middle East talks by U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
