    The Council of the Islamic African Centre held its first conference in the new centre in Khartoum, Sudan on Sunday (9 October).

    SYNOPSIS: The new centre was financed by contributions from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. It has been built so that Islamic culture can be developed and spread in the African continent. Six countries sent representatives to the meeting, which was addressed first by Doctor Abdulla El-Tayeb, a Sudanese representatives.

    Others at this meeting in the new cultural institute included the director of the centre, Doctor Yogi. On his left was the chairman, Doctor Abdul Aziz Abdulla, of Saudi Arabia's Riyadh University, who also addressed the meeting.

    The Council discussed arrangements for the inauguration of the centre, to be opened by President Jaafar Mohammed Nimeiri three days later (on 12 October). The cultural centre complements an existing Education Institute and will concentrate on the linguistics of Arabic.
