Background: Chicago petrol station owner Isadore Portnoff - World War Two United States Navy veteran - has been entertaining Lake Michigan crowds with "Lady Be Good", his home-made submarine.

Made from a 500-gallon fuel tank, the 13-foot long craft dives and surfaces with a one-man crew. Early trials were unsuccessful, but a combination of lead weights and compressed air eventually produced satisfactory performances.

In Chicago's annual Venetian Night revels "Lady Be Good" held an honoured processional place as "Nautilus" - a name generally connected with Jules Verne's Captain Nemo, or the super-modern nuclear-powered submarine.
