  • Description

The 1976 London International Motor Show opens at Earls Court on Wednesday (20 October). It will be the last show at Earls Court for some time because the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders will not be organising a show next year and in 1978 it will be held at the National Exhibition Centre near Birmingham.

SYNOPSIS: But this hasn't distracted from the current show with its hundreds of exhibits. Naturally British car manufacturers are well represented. Leyland's new Rover 3500 is one of many new cars on show.

Lotus are showing their new mid-engined two-seater Esprit, as well as their Elite and Eclat models which are already available.

The Rolls Royce stand features both Rolls Royce and Bently Corniche convertibles, and the very expensive Carmargue.

Aston Martin have revived the name Lagonda for their latest luxury car. The new Lagonda has a wedge shaped front, is powered by a V-8 engine, and has a top speed of more than 140 miles an hour (225 kilometres an hour). An Arab buyer has already ordered three despite their cost of 25,000 pounds each (40,000 dollars U.S.)
Foreign exhibitors are also there in numbers. This French Porsche Turbo, with a price tag of nearly 20,000 pounds (33,000 dollars U.S.) isn't the car for the average motorist.

Neither is this Panther De Ville Convertible which costs nearly twice as much. But its builders, Panther Westwinds of Britain can't satisfy the demand for the cars.

United States manufacturers are represented with this Pontiac Firebird, and Ford, Chrysler and American Motors also have cars on show. And, since no motor show would be complete without an exotic Italian car, both Ferrari and Lamborghini are showing cars capable of more than 180 miles an hour (290 kilometres an hour). This is Lamborghini's Countach.
