  • Description

Visnews - June 11, at Calais, France, saw Madame Bleriot, 75 years old widow of the intrepid aviator who was the first man to fly the English Channel in 1909, open the new Air Terminal building at Calais-Merck Airport to mark the Fiftieth anniversary of the epoch-making flight from France to England.

The new building, constructed at a cost of GBP100,000 by the Calais Chamber of Commerce, was named Aerogare Bleriot in honour of the famous airman.

Among those present at the ceremony was the Mayor of Bleriot Plage, M. Jules Boulart, who was an eye-witness of Bleriot's take-off from Calais in 1909.

In 1958 more than 100,000 passengers passed through Calais Airport and it is expected that this number will be doubled this year.

In order to accommodate the larger planes required to carry this number, many of them tourists arriving with their cars by the ferry service, the runways have had to be extended from 1250 yards to 1500 yards.
