  • Description

The Northern and Southern areas of Sudan on Sunday (27 Feb) agreed to a formula which will give the South self-government and end 16 years of conflict.

Talks have been going on since mid-February in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa between representatives of the Sudanese Government and leaders of the South Sudan Liberation Front.

The Dispute has been going on since 1955 when the largely African population in Southern Sudan rose against the Arab Moslem Government in Khartoum.

SYNOPSIS: The Sudanese Vice-President, Mr Abel Alier, arrives in Addis Ababa earlier this month at the beginning of talks which on Sunday ended in agreement to give Southern Sudan self-government. Mr Alier signed a document on behalf of the Sudanese Government which it is hoped will and sixteen years of conflict between the largely African southern area, and the Arab Moslem Government in Khartoum.

It was in 1955 that the self-styled South Sudan Liberation Front took up arms against the Government. Since then clashes between Liberation Front Troops and Government units have been frequent - but reports say the new agreement includes provision for a ceasefire.

For many years, the plight of the Southern Sudanese was said to be serious - with starvation and death common among supporters of the Liberation Army.

Nevertheless, a rebel government was established - using this building as headquarters. It was this administration which on Sunday announced that agreement had been reached with the Khartoum Government. It's expected the new state in Souther Sudan will become known by the name already used by the Front - "Azania". Reports say the South Sudan Liberation Front has agreed with the Government that a new constitution should come into force in thirty days. The final communique from the talks which have given this administration self-rule says both sides had the restoration of peace and stability as their primary concern.
