    A TEN DAY SEMINAR OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF RADIO AND TELEVISION IN AFRICA ENDED ON FRIDAY (JUNE 20). IT HAD BEEN ATTENDED BY DELEGATES FROM 45 AFRICAN STATIONS, AND THERE WERE ALSO 16 SPEAKERS FROM EUROPE.

    THE SEMINAR WAS SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION (ITU) IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNION OF AFRICAN RAPIO AND TELEVISION STATIONS. IT WAS INAUGURATED ON JUNE 10TH BY THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ITU, MR MOHAMED MILI, WHO WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND THE CLOSING SESSION.

    THIS IS THE FIRST SEMINAR OF ITS KIND IN AFRICA. IT IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST AS IT BROUGHT TOGETHER ALL AFRICAN MEMBERS OF THE ITU. DELEGATES WERE ABLE TO SPEAK IN FRENCH OR ENGLISH, THE TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES, AND THERE WAS SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION PROVIDED.

    PROBLEMS DISCUSSED AT THE SEMINAR INCLUDED THE FUTURE OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN AFRICA. DELEGATES WERE TOLD BY EUROPEAN SPEAKERS OF THE PROGRESS MADE IN THE FIELD OF INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN RECENT YEARS. THE USE OF MODERN EQUIPMENT AND THE PROBLEM OF FINDING QUALIFIED STAFF TO USE IT WAS DISCUSSED, AND DELEGATES FROM FRENCH AND ENGLISH TELEVISION STATIONS GAVE THE SEMINAR THEIR VIEWS ON THIS.

    THE SEMINAR WAS ORGANISED BY THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT WITH THE HELP OF RADIO SENEGAL. IT WAS PRESIDED OVER BY THE SENEGALESE DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION, MR MOUSTAPHA NIASSE.
