The President of Frelimo (The Front for the Liberation of Mozambique). Mr. Samora Machel, said Frelimo would "crush colonial powers that might want to disrupt the government" when Mozambique become independent next month.
Mr. Machel told a mammoth rally in Lusaka on Thursday (15 May) that he would not tolerate any forces that wanted to cause chaos in Mozambique in order to delay the country's independence.
The Frelimo will become the government in Mozambique when the Portuguese territory gains full independence on 25 June. Mr. Machel is tipped to become the country's Prime Minister.
Earlier, Mr. Machel and Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda had important talks on Frelimo plans to impose a trade blockade on Rhodesia after 25 June, in an effort to bring down the white Rhodesian Government of Mr. Ian Smith.
After the Lusaka rally, Mr. Machel flew to Tanzania, where he has spent ten years in exile from Mozambique.
