  • Description

Snow covered most of Britain today (Sunday 27 December) as temperatures dipped below freezing in many areas. The south of England was the worst hit and more snow and cold winter weather is forecast for the next few days.

Dorset, south-west England, was one of the worst hit areas. It was mid-afternoon before the roads were cleared. Stranded motorists abandoning their cars hampered the snow clearing teams by blocking the paths of snow-ploughs and gritting lorries. Regular police patrols will report on the condition.

In Kent, the snow drifts gave the countryside the 'Christmas Card' look, but provided hazards for motorists. people have been warned not to drive unless it is absolutely necessary.

Many sports events have been cancelled and transport services have been disrupted. The notable exception in Britain was Scotland whose ski-slopes remained virtually untouched by snow. The north of England, which usually gets the worst weather, has not been affected as badly as the south.
