  • Description

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Primo Carnera has come home to his native Italy. Carnera, 60, arrived at Rome airport today (Saturday) in obviously poor health.

Carnera is suffering an illness he refuses to discuss. He was supported by a steward as he walked slowly down the aircraft gangway, leaning heavily on a stick.

About 100 fans and journalists who had gathered at the airport gave the former champion a round of cheers when he was taken in wheelchair into an airport lounge.

In a hoarse, low voice, Carnera told the group of friends and reporters: "I am happy to return among my own people. I am grateful for this moving welcome."
Tomorrow evening he and his wife will travel to his birthplace in Sequals, near Udine in north east Italy.

When he left Los Angeles airport an old sparring partner said: "I'm sending him home to Italy -- may be for the last time."
Carnera, six foot six inches (198 cm) tall, was known as the "Ambling Alp". He was world champion for a year from June 1933.
