    MEREDITH WAS ENROLLED ON OCTOBER 1, FOLLOWING VICIOUS RIOTS IN THE UNIVERSITY TOWN OF OXFORD. AFTER BEING ADMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY, HE WAS ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY AN OFFICIAL ESCORT AND TRAILED BY FEDERAL MARSHALS IN CASE OF ANY TROUBLE.

    FEDERAL MARSHALS ARE STILL ON THE CAMPUS, BUT THEY TRY TO KEEP OUT OF SIGHT AND AVOID, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, THE APPEARANCE OF A CLOSE GUARD AROUND JAMES MEREDITH.

    (THE US ARMY ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY THAT A FURTHER 1,000 MISSISSIPPI NATIONAL GUARDSMEN WILL BE RELEASED FROM FEDERAL SERVICE NEXT TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16. AT THE HEIGHT OF TROUBLE, 23,600 SERVICEMEN AND NATIONAL GUARDSMEN WERE UNDER FEDERAL COMMAND OF THESE, ONLY 4,500 ARE STILL ON CALL).
