  • Description

Amid tight security, President Tito of Yugoslavia and President Costa Gomes of Portugal held talks on Sunday (21 March) at a tourist resort near the southern Portuguese city of Faro.

Hundreds of para-military National Guardsmen and troops armed with sub-machine guns guarded the two presidents when they met in a villa at the Vale Do Lobo Golf Club 10 miles (16 kilometres) from Faro.

President Tito arrived in Portugal on Saturday on his way home from a three nation tour of Latin America.

According to Reuters, diplomatic sources said the two men and their delegations discussed international affairs, the widening of economic and cultural ties and tourism.

The sources said President Tito had taken the opportunity to repay President Costa Gomes' visit to Yugoslavia last October, by making a stop-over in Portugal on his return from Latin America.

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Mr. Jose Pinheiro De Azevedo, also attended the talks.

President Tito is scheduled to leave for Yugoslavia on Monday.
