  • Description

AFTER TWO HOURS OF TALKS WITH THE E.E.C. (EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY) COMMISSION ON THURSDAY (24 OCTOBER), CANADA'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. PIERRE TRUDEAU, ANNOUNCED THAT DISCUSSIONS WOULD BE INTENSIFIED ON CANADA'S DEMAND FOR A FORMAL TRADE AGREEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY.

HE TOLD JOURNALISTS AFTER THE MEETING "WE HAVE DECIDED TO INTENSIFY OUR DISCUSSIONS AND AMPLIFY THEM. IT IS TO BE DONE IS A WAY WHICH HAS TO BE NEGOTIATE."
MR. TRUDEAU, WHO SAID HE HAD BEEN ENCOURAGED BY THE DISCUSSIONS HE HAD, WAS IS BRUSSELS TO TRY TO SPEED UP CONTACTS ALREADY UNDERWAY CONCERNING HIS COUNTRY'S DEMAND TO THE E.E.C. FOR NON-PREFERENTIAL TRADE AGREEMENT -- SOMETHING THE COMMUNITY HAS NEVER BEFORE GRANTED TO A DEVELOP COUNTRY.

THE CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER TOLD THE JOURNALISTS THAT IN THE TALKS HE HAD NOT TRIED TO ACHIEVE ANY CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENT WITH THE E.E.C. THIS WAS PRINCIPALLY BECAUSE THE COMMISSION, WHICH NEGOTIATES TRADE ON BEHALF OF THE COMMUNITY, HAS NOT YET BEEN GIVEN ANY MANDATE BY THE NINE MEMBER GOVERNMENTS TO MAKE A DEAL WITH CANADA.
