  • Description

Mexican soccer authorities are well on the way to completing final preparations at the stadiums where the major World Cup games will be played. The opening ceremony and the first matches are on Sunday, May 31st.

At Mexico City Airport, where many of the thousands of World Cup spectators will arrive, welcome signs have been put up. Parts of the city's new Underground Railway system will be in temporary operation for the duration of the World Cup games. The line will then be closed down in preparation for the official opening of the Metro by Mexico's President in November. While the World Cup is on, a train and bus service will be operate, carrying the expected thousands of football fans in speed and comfort to the Aztec Stadium. At the stadium, the focal point of World Cup activity in Mexico City itself, technicians and groundstaff are putting the final touches on the modern sports ground. A television control centre is ready to carry the pictures of the World Cup games via satellite to the world.

A comprehensive press centre has been established at a hotel in Mexico City, and Mexican girls in pink uniforms will handle press enquiries. Dozens of Telex operators will send journalists stories to newspapers, and broadcasting organisation, throughout the world.

Outside Mexico City stadiums are ready at Toluca, Guadalajara, Leon and Pueblo. The qualifying matches will be played in these stadiums and work has been going on to get them ready for the first matches on May 31. At Guadalajara a complete new tier has been added to the already large stadium providing thousands of extra seats with a roof.

With only days to go before the first matches, the stadiums, where the world's top soccer teams will play for the Jules Rimet Cup, are waiting for the players and the fans.
