  • Description

Six suspected guerrilla fighters arrested by Chad security forces earlier this month were put on public display Tuesday(27 June) and allowed to answer questions from journalists.

The men were arrested on June 5 along with a large supply of arms. The had of President Francois Tombalbays's military staff Colones Djogo Gatugo told the huge crowd of the accused guerrillas activities.

Colonel Gatugo said that the leaders of the plot were Mahamat Abba, a former political prisoner freed by President Tombalbays, and lean-Clauds Gentil, now know as Major-General Emile of the Chad Liberation front, a guerrilla organisation in rebellion since 1968.

Under questioning from reporters the six men admitted to conspiring to blow up the capital's power facility and broadcasting station. They also admitted that attacks were planned against other communication centres as well as public gathering places.

The six men were displayed along with the cache of arms seized at their arrest. They confirmed that fifteen others had conspired to take part in the raids, but they were able to escape.
