  • Description

The four Austrian soldiers of the United Nations Disengagement Observation Force killed on Tuesday (25 June) when their vehicle struck a mine on the road leading to the Peak of Mount Hermon, were honoured at Damascus, Syria Airport as their bodies were about to be flown home, and on their arrival at Vienna Airport on Friday (28 June).

A memorial service for them was held at Damascus Airport with full military honours. A wreath from President Assad of Syria was prominent among the many floral tributes.

The ceremony was attended by Brigadier-General Adnan Tayyara, Syria's Liaison Officer with the UN Disengagement Observer Force, Brigadier-General Bonzalo Briceno, Commander of UNDOF, and senior UNDOF officers.

A Syrian Guard of Honour gave the last salute before the coffins, draped with UN flags, were flown to Austria for burial.

When the aircraft bringing home the dead arrived at Vienna Airport, it taxied to a place where sorrowing relatives stood silently. Nearby floral wreaths were laid on the tarmac. Austrian Chancellor, Dr. Bruno Kreisky stood silently nearby. Austrian and UN troops provided an honour guard while a military band played a lament.

The death of the four marred the last stage of the Israeli handover of territory captured from Syria.

A UN spokesman said the road had been checked within hours of the explosion and had been declared safe. He added that the areas on and north of Mount Hermon were still "covered with large numbers of mines".

SYNOPSIS: To the strains of a lament the coffins were carried past the Guard of Honour, away from the bereaved relative and to the waiting hearses. At a time when the official fighting has stopped in the Middle East and a kind of peace is being built, four young men who had played a part in the construction of that peace suffered an untimely death.
