    A 1903 MERCEDES LED 250 VETERAN CARS DATING BACK TO 1893 OVER THE FINISHING LINE AT THE ENGLISH COASTAL RESORT TOWN OF BRIGHTON TODAY (SUNDAY) TO WIN BRITAIN'S ANNUAL VETERAN CAR RALLY. IN ALL, 250 VEHICLES TOOK PART, INCLUDING MANY ENTRIES FROM EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES.

    DRIVERS IN TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY FASHIONS, AND LADIES IN FRILLED EDWARDIAN BONNETS, BRAVED THE WET WINDY CONDITIONS, SITTING HIGH UP IN THE GAILY-DECORATED OLD CARS AS THEY MADE THEIR WAY SLOWLY ON THE 53-MILE (85 KLM) RUN FROM LONDON. THE WINNING MERCEDES TOOK THREE HOURS FOR THE COURSE, WHILE OTHER CARS TOOK UP TO SEVEN HOURS - AN AVERAGE SPEED OF ABOUT NINE MILES AN HOUR (14 KLMS AN HOUR).

    THE LAST CAR TO ARRIVE, AN 1893 BENZ, WAS ALSO THE OLDEST IN THE RACE. IT WAS ENTERED BY THE ALLGEMIENER SCHNAUFERL CLUB OF LUDWIGSHAVEN, WEST GERMANY, AND DRIVEN BY HERR KURT KRANNICH. OF THE 250 ENTRANTS, 36 FAILED TO COMPLETE THE RUN.
