Background: The finals of the men's and women's singles were a fitting finale to the French International Tennis championships in Paris on Sunday (6 June). Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia became the first man in eleven years to win the singles two years running. This brings him to within ten points in the lawn tennis "Grand Prix" of the man he beat, Ilie Nastase of Rumania. Kodes won 8-6, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The women's singles title went to Evonne Goolagong of Australia. She won at her first attempt at the Championships without dropping a single set. Miss Goolagong beat her compatriot Helen Gourlay 6-3, 7-5.

SYNOPSIS: A large crowd saw a fine ending to the French international tennis championships in Paris last Sunday, in spite of the cold day. It's the final of the women's championship. Evonne Goolagong of Australia, the 19-year-old part-aboriginal girl, faces her compatriot, Helen Gourlay. Miss Goolagong wins.

Miss Goolagong beat Miss Gourlay 6-3, 7-5. It's a remarkable achievement. It's a remarkable achievement. It's the first time she's taken part in the French Championships, and she became the champion without losing a set.

Ilie Nastase serves in the men's final, also on Sunday. Nastase is the first Rumanian to reach the final. He faces Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia, who won last year.

There was a lot of sympathy for Nastase. He wasn't fully fit, and before the game he's said he was pleased enough just to reach the final.

Jan Kodes played a powerful game, after recovering from a false start when he almost lost the first set. He proved too strong for Nastase. He won in four sets, and became the first man in eleven years to win the French championships two years running.

Kodes won 8-6, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
