Mr.Julius Nyerere, Chief Minister for Nyasaland, became the first African to attend a meeting of the East African High Commission when he joined the Governors of Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda, the Resident of Zanzibar and leading officials at Government House, Nairobi, Kenya, Nov 23.
On his way home to Nyasaland after talks in London with Colonial Secretary Macleod, Mr Nyerere outlined his plans for an East African federation.
He said that federation should come before each of the states becomes independent, not afterwards, as they might then have difficulty in surrendering their sovereignty.
Although no statement was issued afterwards, it is believed that they discussed Jomo Kenyatta, the former Mau Mau leader, Now living under a restriction order at Lodwar, a remote northern Kenya province, Kenyatta's release is being demanded by the powerful Kenya African National Union, who want him as the colony's first African Chief Minister.
