  • Description

INTRODUCTION: A huge contingent of ultra-nationalist Israelis has shown its disapproval of any withdrawal from occupied areas by marching through the hills of the West Bank of the river Jordan. They were answering a call by the religious Gush Emunim group, to start a new settlement in the area.

SYNOPSIS: An estimated 20 to 40 thousand Israelis signed on for the march, which took them through the rain-sodden Samarian hills. Although the call had been to start a new settlement, the authorities made it clear the demonstration was only symbolic and that settlement would not be allowed.

The marchers were under the protection of Israeli soldiers who stood by in case of trouble. Although the march went quietly enough, it did spark off a demonstration by Arab youths in nearby Nablus. There were brief clashes with Israeli troops, but no injuries. Thirteen people were detained after the encounter. Many of the marchers were themselves armed against opposition to their demonstration.

After trudging the nine mile (14 kilometre) circular route, the Israelis gradually made their way back to their homes. Many of them were children, aged or handicapped people -- the rain adding to their discomfort. Their route took them through only one Arab village.
