  • Description

MOURNING AMERICANS AND FOREIGN VISITORS IN THEIR THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN PAYING TRIBUTE AT THE GRAVESIDE OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY IN ARLINGTON CEMETERY, WASHINGTON. A WHITE PICKET FENCE HAS BEEN ERECTED AROUND THE GRAVE, BANKED HIGH WITH FLOWERS SENT BY SCORES OF NATIONS.

AMONG THE FLORAL TRIBUTES WERE WREATHS FROM SWITZERLAND, WEST GERMANY, PAKISTAN -- AND ONE FROM BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH, FILMED HERE.

MANY OF THE MOURNERS, MAKING THE PILGRIMAGE IN CARS AND ON FOOT, STOOD IN SILENCE BY THE GRAVE. SOME MEN UNCOVERED THEIR HEADS, AND FATHERS LIFTED THEIR CHILDREN FOR A BETTER VIEW. SEVERAL WOMEN BROKE DOWN AND WEPT OPENLY.

THE GRAVESIDE, LIGHTED AT NIGHT BY AN ETERNAL FLAME, WILL BE UNDER A 24-HOUR MILITARY GUARD FOR THE NEXT WEEK.
