  • Description

The former Independence Palace in Saigon was the scene of mass celebrations on Friday (30 April) to mark the first anniversary of the final Communist victory in South Vietnam.

Leading members of the Provisional Revolutionary Government including the Chairman of the City Peoples' Revolutionary Committee, Mr. Vo Ven Kiet and high ranking Politburo member, Mr. Pham Hong presided over the festivities.

A huge crowd of more than 100,000 cheering people contrasted greatly to the deserted streets of Saigon this time last year when the Communist tanks rumbled triumphantly through the palace gates and troops raised the Viet Cong flag.

Mr. Pham Hung told the crowds that it was only the determination of the people that had made the rapid advancement towards a re-united and socialist Vietnam possible.

He said the celebrations were to commemorate the victory of the Vietnamese people over "American colonial-imperialism".

As well as formal speeches ad ceremonies, the celebrations included traditional and modern Vietnamese dancing and the singing of new revolutionary songs.
