  • Description

At the New Philadelphia Stadium in Athens yesterday (Saturday), young members of the Revolutionary Youth Legion -- known as "Alkimi" -- took an oath of allegiance in the presence of Government Officials, Armed Forces leaders, representatives of the Archbishopric of Athens and Security Authority Chiefs.

Alkimi means "Strong, Stout, Sturdy" -- and it was chosen the name for this movement of boys and girls from 10 years of age and up, who are said to have healthy ideas of patriotism.

The movement is controlled by a Special Government Committee whose aim is to preserve "Greek youths' nationalistic feelings and protect it from the corrosion of Communism."
The Alkimi are being trained for "paramilitary purposes", according to the authorities -- and wear black battle-dress, boots and forage caps. Their parade discipline shows them to be proud and military in their bearing.
