    THE PARIS-MARSEILLES EXPRESS CRASHED NEAR LYONS IN FRANCE TODAY (MONDAY). SIX PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN KILLED AND ABOUT SIXTY OTHERS WERE INJURED.

    THE TRAIN CAREERED OFF THE TRACK WHILE IT WAS TRAVELLING AT A SPEED OF 75 MILES AN HOUR (12O KPH). TEN COACHES OF THE 14-CAR TRAIN CAME OFF THE RAILS SOME 15 MILES (24 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF LYONS. IT WAS CARRYING HUNDREDS OF HOLIDAY-MAKERS INCLUDING A NUMBER OF CHILDREN GOING TO SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPS. THE HEAT HAMPERED THE EFFORTS OF RESCUE WORKERS TO EXTRACT DEAD AND INJURED FROM THE TANGLED MASS OF THE WRECKAGE. AN ARMADA OF AMBULANCES, FIRE ENGINES AND TRACTORS SPED TO THE SCENE IN ANSWER TO AN EMERGENCY CALL FOR HELP. A HELICOPTER WAS USED TO TAKE INJURED PEOPLE TO HOSPITAL. THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH IS NOT YET KNOWN.
