    A United Nations conference to discuss guaranteeing food supplies for half the world's population opened in colombo, Sri Lanka, on Wednesday (March 27). The meeting of the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East -- ECAFE -- included representatives from, 38 member nations. Twenty-one other delegates from Latin america, North America, Africa and the Middle East were attending the week-long conference as observers.

    The members and associate members of ECAFE were to be asked to declared food, energy, technical knowledge and natural resources as priority areas for the region covered by the Commission -- populated by more than two thousand million people. Apart from food, other issues scheduled for discussion included regional co-operation on trade and marketing measures, a proposed Asian reserve monetary fund, trade liberalisation, and general industrial co-operation.
