  • Description

Following last week's announcement by Israeli Army officials that travels restrictions between the occupied areas of the Gaza stria and West Bank of Jordan would be completely lifted, allowing residents of Samaria and Judea to make visits without the need for special passes, hundreds of cars made their way on Sunday (2 July) from Gaza through Israel to Qalqilia and other towns of the West Bank. Restrictions governing the travel of residents of all the administered areas to Israel proper were lifted several weeks ago.
Passengers from the Gaza Strip travelled in their hundreds by bus and car to the West Bank of Jordan on Sunday. It was the first day residents of the occupied areas of the Gaza Strip and West Bank could visit each other without the need for special passes, and followed an announcement last Friday from the Israeli Army that travel restrictions in force between administered areas were to be lifted. Passengers travelling between the areas were, however, still required to pass through border checkpoints in the usual way.
The town of Qalqilia, 25 kilometres north-east to Tel Aviv, lies just inside the occupied West Bank territory. On Sunday the local traffic was swollen with visitors.
For several weeks restriction which had governed the travel of residents of all the administered areas to Israel proper have been lifted, but this further move has particularly pleased inhabitants of Samaris and Judea who can visit relatives more easily.
