Background: The American-led United Nations Command and North Korea have agreed to the partition of the joint security area of the Panmunjon truce village in the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement was reached on the 6th of September, but newsmen were not allowed to view the re-structured village until Friday (17 September) -- one day after the new arrangements came into effect. The changes have been made to avoid the possibility of clashes between the two sides, following the killing on the 18th of August of two U.S. army officers by North Korean guards. The joint security area has been split into two halves, along the military demarcation line, with military personnel form each side barred from crossing the line. The tree which was at the centre of the dispute which resulted in the deaths of the U.S. officers, has now been felled.

Each side has agreed to be responsible for the safety of the personnel of the other side who come legally into its half. Four North Korean guard posts in the southern sector under the control of the United Nations Command have been withdrawn. Markers have also been placed by both sides to indicate the military demarcation line.
