  • Description

Britain's largest trade union, the three-million-member Transport and General Workers Union, today (July 14) voted against Britain joining the Common Market. The vote, taken at the union's two-yearly conference, underlines general union hostility throughout the country on the issue. The conference also urged the Trades Union Congress -- representing nine million workers -- and the opposition labour Party to conduct a public campaign against Common Market entry. The TGWU leader, Mr Jack Jones, who addressed the conference and urged members to vote against Common Market entry, said later he expected a similar vote from delegates at the Labour Party special conference on Europe on Saturday (July 17).
